A Life Dedicated to the Young
John Louville Curtis Sr. was born on May 9, 1940 in Damariscotta, Maine to George Hartley and Violet Morrison Curtis. From the very beginning, his life was intertwined with the outdoors, with children, and with the belief that every young person deserves a chance to grow, laugh, and discover who they are.
A graduate of the University of Bridgeport Arnold College School of Physical Education, John went on to devote his entire professional life to nurturing the next generation — first as a teacher and dormitory prefect at Milford Academy, and then across 40 extraordinary years as Director of Athletics, coach, and educator at Fairfield Country Day School in Fairfield, Connecticut.
He was a driving force behind the construction of FCDS's ice rink and spent countless winters teaching children to skate and play hockey, personally maintaining the ice. His passion for the rink earned him induction into the Zamboni Hall of Fame. Upon his retirement, FCDS honored him by naming a new athletic field Curtis Field — a permanent tribute to his four decades of service.
John passed away peacefully at home on April 5, 2025, at the age of 84, with his devoted wife Jean — his partner of 59 years — by his side. He is survived by Jean, his three children Jack, Jill, and Jennifer, and his grandchildren.
