John L. Curtis Sr.

Director · Mentor · Champion of Children

A man who believed, with his whole heart, that a summer at camp could change a child's life forever — and spent a lifetime proving it.

A Life Dedicated to the Young

John Louville Curtis Sr. was born on May 9, 1940 in Damariscotta, Maine to George Hartley and Violet Morrison Curtis. From the very beginning, his life was intertwined with the outdoors, with children, and with the belief that every young person deserves a chance to grow, laugh, and discover who they are.

A graduate of the University of Bridgeport Arnold College School of Physical Education, John went on to devote his entire professional life to nurturing the next generation — first as a teacher and dormitory prefect at Milford Academy, and then across 40 extraordinary years as Director of Athletics, coach, and educator at Fairfield Country Day School in Fairfield, Connecticut.

He was a driving force behind the construction of FCDS's ice rink and spent countless winters teaching children to skate and play hockey, personally maintaining the ice. His passion for the rink earned him induction into the Zamboni Hall of Fame. Upon his retirement, FCDS honored him by naming a new athletic field Curtis Field — a permanent tribute to his four decades of service.

John passed away peacefully at home on April 5, 2025, at the age of 84, with his devoted wife Jean — his partner of 59 years — by his side. He is survived by Jean, his three children Jack, Jill, and Jennifer, and his grandchildren.

The Values He Taught Us All

He shaped the lives of so many children by teaching them the core standards of camping: teamwork, sportsmanship, and outdoor adventure. Countless children from all over the globe built lasting memories having had a fantastic summer camp experience at Camp Pinehurst.
— From His Obituary, April 2025
🤝

Teamwork

He believed children learn their greatest lessons not in classrooms, but working alongside each other — in the field, on the ice, and under the pines.

🏅

Sportsmanship

For 40 years at FCDS and decades at Camp Pinehurst, John modeled what it meant to compete with grace, humility, and respect for one another.

🌲

Outdoor Adventure

He knew that the woods, the lake, and the open sky have a power that no building can replicate — and he made sure every child in his care experienced it.

💛

Generosity of Spirit

From Fairfield to Bridgeport, from Maine to Connecticut, John never stopped asking: what more can I do for the children around me?

His Name, His Mission

The Curtis Summer Camp Fund

The Curtis Summer Camp Fund, Inc. was established to carry forward John's lifelong belief in the power of the camp experience — and to extend that gift to children who need it most. In his memory, we send deserving kids from Bridgeport, Connecticut to two weeks at Camp Pinehurst each summer, giving them the adventure, friendship, and growth he championed his entire life.

His family asked that memorial donations be directed to the Curtis Summer Camp Fund. Every contribution sends a child to the place John loved — and carries his legacy into the next generation.
